”Filmistaan” fra regissøren Nitin Kakkar: Komedie og konflikt – fordommer og fellesskap

En komedie, står det i programmet. Ja, ”Filmistaan” er en artig film. Latter og glede, sang, dans, populærmusikk og filmsitater. Men dette er under overflata og inntil beinet en film om grenser og konflikt mellom to land som ble separert i 1947: India og Pakistan. Og en film med et klart budskap.

Den indiske skuespilleren Sunny går på auditions for å få roller i Bollywood-filmer, men han har liten suksess. Så får han jobb som assistent for et amerikansk filmcrew. Under innspilling i grenseområdet Rajasthan blir han ved en feiltakelse kidnappet av religiøse fundamentalister og deretter holdt som fange i en pakistansk landsby, med to fundamentalister som fangevoktere.

Mange av sangene, dansene, maten og skikkene i landsbyen er lik det Sunny kjenner fra India, men grenser, religion og fordommer skiller pakistanere og indere. Sunny er en glad gutt, og etter kort tid har han sjarmert unger og voksne i landsbyen, og de to fangevokterne lar ham til tider gå fritt inn og ut av cella si. Han blir venn med Aftab, en voksen sønn i huset der Sunny holdes som fange. Aftab er også filminteressert og en morsom fyr, om enn ikke så naiv som Sunny. Sammen lager de to kompisene et plot for at Sunny skal kunne flykte over grensa til India.

Og budskapet? Brorskap – som burde være mulig mellom folk på tvers av grenser. Har du hørt det før, sier du? Kanskje ikke så fint manifestert som i filmen om Sunny, Aftab og folkene i den pakistanske grenselandsbyen.

Comedy and conflict – bigotry and brotherhood

A comedy, it says in the program. Yes, «Filmistaan” is a fun film. Laughter and joy, song, dance, pop and movie quotes. But this is below the surface and down to the core a film about borders and conflict between the two countries separated in 1947: India and Pakistan. And it’s a film with a clear message.

The Indian actor Sunny is going on auditions for roles in Bollywood movies, but he has little success. So he gets a job as an assistant to a U.S. film crew. When they are shooting the film in the border area Rajasthan he accidentally is kidnapped by religious fundamentalists. Then he’s kept as a prisoner in a Pakistani village, with two fundamentalists as captors.

Many of the songs, dances, food and customs of the village are similar to what Sunny knows from India, but the borders, religion and prejudice stand Pakistanis and Indians. Sunny is a happy boy, and after a short time, he has charmed children and adults in the village, and the two guards leave him at times to walk freely in and out of his cell. He befriends Aftab, an adult son in the house where Sunny is kept as a prisoner. Aftab is also interested in movies and a funny guy, albeit not as naive as Sunny. Together the two blokes’ plans a plot that should help Sunny to flee across the border to India.

And the message is? Brotherhood – that should be possible between people across borders. Have you heard it before, you say? Maybe not as nice as manifested in the film about Sunny, Aftab and all the people in the Pakistani frontier city.
